The Libertine

'Allow me to be frank at the commencement. You will not like me. The gentlemen will be envious and the ladies will be repelled. You will not like me now and you will like me less as we go on... That is it. That is my prologue, nothing in rhyme, no protestations of modesty, you were not expecting that I hope. I am Todd Desmond Atkins and I do not want you to like me.'

I noticed the moon this morning driving to work. I almost forgot about it. I haven't seen it in a very long time...or haven't noticed it in a very long time. By the way, the 'commencement' is from The Libertine, the opening words from John Wilmont/Johnny Depp. Great movie!

Back to the moon! I was thinking, after noticing it, if we weren't taught in school that this was just a moon and it has been there for centuries, what would we think of it. Before astrology, what did the earliest thinkers believe the moon was. Because now it feels like my first time seeing it, and if I didn't remember what I was taught I would be amazed.

It is a bright crescent moon. I wonder what the Native Americans thought of it. I wonder what the Africans thought of it. The Aztecs and Mayans. If it had a role in their beliefs or religions. If everyone had their own opinions before the so called facts came about through the study of and landing on, I wonder. Just like with Copernicus and Galileo. Was the Earth flat or round? Why is the moon there? Where did it come from? Planets, orbits, very amazing. My life is becoming Sci-fi.

Back to Earth. The 'compromising' planet. Maybe its not a good idea. Maybe next time.
Maybe never. 'But life is not a succession of urgent nows. Its a listless trickle of why should I's.' People are so weird sometimes, it makes me question my sanity...or the sanity of my company. By company I don't mean business.

'I don't mean to upset people, but I must speak my mind. For what's in my mind is far more interesting than what's outside my mind.'

"Wake Up"

I'm going to ride this plane out of your life again.
I wish that I could stay but you argue.
More than this I wish you could've seen my face
In backseat staring out...of the window.

I'll do anything for you,
Kill anyone for you.

So leave yourself intact
'Cause I will be coming back.
In a phrase to cut these lips,
I love you.

The morning will come
In the press of every kiss
With your head upon my chest
Where I will annoy you
With every waking breath
Until you decide to wake up.

I've earned through hope and faith
From the curves around your face
That I'm the one you'll hold forever.
If morning never comes for either one of us,
Then this I pray to you...wherever.

I'll do anything for you,
This story is for you.

So leave yourself intact
'Cause I won't be coming back.
In a phrase to cut these lips
I loved you.

The morning will come
In the press of every kiss
With your head upon my chest
Where I will annoy you
With every waking breath
Until you decide to wake up.

"The reason we all like to think so well of others is that we are all afraid for ourselves. The basis of optimism is sheer terror."

I just like that quote. I'm pretty sure it doesn't apply. . .or maybe it does.

Are you an optimist...existentialist...something-ist?

or maybe...

not.
